ModernAKIS aims to improve the capacity of AKIS actors to leverage the individual, organizational and systemic resources needed to transform towards more coherent, efficient and effective AKIS systems and the transition towards more sustainable management and use of natural resources in agriculture and forestry. It will achieve this by building and supporting a European network of at least 1 000 key AKIS actors, including AKIS coordinating bodies, from all EU Member States, who will act as a link in the transformation of AKIS systems towards more efficient management and modernisation of the European agri-food sector. The project will also build the capacity of these key AKIS actors towards system understanding and engagement, enabling them to implement long-term system changes that will improve AKIS. In addition, it will create at least 1 community of practice in each Member State, enabling participants to act as agents of change in their communities. In addition, a modern AKIS will provide a comprehensive digital catalogue with new know-how and at least 80 tools and methods to support key AKIS actors in improving knowledge flows and developing a well-functioning AKIS in line with relevant policy objectives, e.g. Green Deal, Farm2Fork, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  1. To monitor and engage key actors involved in AKIS changes across the EU (or AKIS transformation pathways) to enable the development of appropriate and sound AKIS governance in Member States.
  2. To enable and empower AKIS actors to initiate transformational systemic change based on a conceptual and methodological framework for strong AKIS and for appropriate monitoring and evaluation processes and tools
  3. To empower CAP governing bodies, AKIS coordinating bodies and key AKIS actors through networks, tools and activities that facilitate better knowledge flows by making information and knowledge more easily accessible and understandable.
  4. To build the capacity of AKIS coordinating bodies and other AKIS actors to understand, analyse, transform, monitor and evaluate their AKIS. Particular attention will be paid to building capacity for effective networking, strengthening knowledge flows and AKIS management activities.
  5. To enable national AKIS actors to develop systems thinking and equip them with the tools and skills to collectively understand, analyse, benchmark, monitor and evaluate their AKIS and understand their role in it.
  6. To enable key AKIS actors to realize their AKIS transformation journeys through continuous improvement at various levels by dynamically engaging Communities of Practice (CoPs) in capacity building on CAP themes relevant to AKIS.
  7. To provide key AKIS actors with knowledge, best practices and models for designing and implementing effective AKIS strategic plans, thereby creating a positive impact on each Member State's CAP policy objectives.
  8. To apply an iterative and interactive approach to capacity building using the participatory tools described in Table 2 and implemented through the AKIS communities of practice and network along the relevant CAP themes. Interaction and co-creation at different levels will be ensured through activities involving different actors (AKIS policy makers and communities of practice, advisors, educators, researchers, farmers, NGOs, etc.).
  9. Communicate, disseminate and engage AKIS actors in the most effective way to ensure that information and knowledge is more readily available, shared and accessible among the AKIS actors of the 27 EU Member States in the project.
  10. Ensure inclusive, transparent and effective decision-making processes with all project partners and stakeholders within the project
