The paper assesses the current situation on the sugar market in the EU, Czech Republic and other major regions of the world. The year 2013 brought a number of changes in the EU sugar sector, or rather in its sugar-producing member states; the changes aim at functioning of the EU sugar market and its member states from 2015 to 2020. Given the growing potential of sugar beet in relation to sugarcane, the current negotiations are aimed at creating optimal conditions for the sugar sector to support the competitiveness of European sugar.
